Wutang Brand Limited: An Ode to The Wu-Tang Clan

by Karmaloop Rep Code

Wutang Brand Limited is an apparel line that pays homage to the Wu-Tang Clan, hailed by Rolling Stone as the best rap group ever. The iconic Wu logo and graphics are vividly displayed in a wide array of tees, tanks, snapbacks, hoodies, sweatshirts, pullovers, varsity jackets, jeans, beanies, skateboard decks, and accessories.

The Wu-Tang Clan

Robert Diggs, a.k.a. RZA, formed Wu Tang Productions in Staten Island, New York in 1992. What started as an independent label for RZA’s original music grew into one of the biggest and most successful brands in music history.

The name Wu-Tang is derived from the kung-fu film “Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang”. Some of the members of the hip-hop group took their stage names from characters in the kung-fu films, such as Ghostface Killah. Many songs by the Wu-Tang Clan, or by individual members of the group, would feature sound effects and voice clips from old kung-fu movies as well.

All nine members of the Wu-Tang Clan perform under pseudonyms: RZA (born Robert Diggs), GZA (born Gary Grice), Ol’ Dirty Bastard (born Russell Jones), Method Man (born Clifford Smith), Raekwon (born Corey Woods), Ghostface Killah (born Dennis Coles), U-God (born Lamont Hawkins), Inspectah Deck (born Jason Hunter), and Masta Killa (born Elgin Turner).

Wu-Tang Clan revolutionized the hip-hop industry in the ’90s. Instead of releasing one album after another, the Clan was designed to establish Wu-Tang as a force with their debut album and then spin off into as many profitable side projects as possible. In the process, the members would all become individual stars as well as receive individual royalty checks.

“Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” came out in 1993, followed by solo projects that elaborated on the theme the group laid out in that album. RZA’s strategy paid off as he would have multiple labels competing with the sales of members that belonged to the same collective. When he felt that it was the right time he would release a collective group album.

The spiritual aspect of the Wu-Tang Clan added to the popularity of their brand. Many of their lyrics discussed concepts such as The Five Percent Nation, Buddhism, the Bible, the Qur’an, Supreme Mathematics, The Nation of Gods and Earths, Greco-Roman mythology, and books such as The Iliad, The Art of War, and The Alchemist.

Wu Wear

After the platinum success of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and its spin-offs, Wu-Tang Productions founded Wu Wear in 1995. Executive producer Oli “Power” Grant opened Wu Wear stores in New York City, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Norfolk, Virginia. Carried by Macy’s, Rich’s, d.e.m.o, and other retailers, Wu Wear earned $10 million in 1998.

The Wu Wear clothing line incorporated the brand with the style that was familiar with the crew. Wu Wear branded off to include sneakers, doo rags, wristbands, headbands, caps, and even cologne.

In 1999, Nike released a limited run of Wu-Tang Clan dunk hi sneakers. Their rarity makes them one of the most highly sought after Nikes, with reseller prices going as high as $7,500.

From 2007-2008, Wu Tang partnered with Alife for an exclusive series called “A Wu-Tang Life” which featured custom sneakers, t-shirts, hoodies, and other accessories for both men and women.

Wu-Tang recently collaborated with Rocksmith to release a new line of tees, snapbacks, tank tops, and other articles of contemporary clothing exclusively for online shopping portals such as Karmaloop and DrJays.

RZA also released two successful applications for mobile devices – “iDrum” and “RZA’s World” – that allow Wu-Tang fans to seamlessly integrate Wu stuff into their lives.

Wu-Tang has established itself as more than just a group of inner city friends making rap music. It has become a brand that represents a culture, a consciousness, a movement, and a lifestyle.

Wu-Tang is now a name associated with not only with one of the best hip-hop collectives of all time but also a multi-million dollar clothing line, a series of comic books, video games, books, movies and recently, mobile phone applications.
