Brand History

An American classic since 1966, Vans is home to the first skateboarding sneakers, the ERA series. Established as the Van Doren Rubber Company in the late 60s, Vans sneakers were developed by brothers, Paul and James, to represent a different type of shoes for then an emerging sport, skateboarding. The creation of the ERA sneakers put skateboarding on the map. And unlike other footwear purveyor, Vans sold the shoes directly to the public. This was an unusual business move during that era but it just goes to show how the company was able to go against the grain to be in touch with its target audience.

From the ERA sneakers, Vans went on to develop different types of footwear for different sports, including a series of sneakers crafted from wool canvas and rubber mukluks for the US Department of Defense and the US Air Force. Known mostly for its street appeal and its hybrid sports/lifestyle aesthetics, Vans sneakers are available in major retailers as well as online at

The First Skateboarding Sneakers

When it comes to skateboarding shoes, nothing beats the original, the ERA sneakers. No other footwear labels were able to define the sport and a generation quite like the Vans ERA sneakers. In fact, the ERA sneakers have reached pop culture icon, forever linking the Vans name to the sport. Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta designed the first-gen ERA sneakers and it was crafted from lightweight canvas outer for breathability, non-slip rubber soles for excellent traction and sturdy inner sole. This style remained virtually unchanged even now. Vans offer a growing selection of footwear including their bestselling Vans Classic Slip-On® to the Classic Authentic®, etc.
