Patagonia: For Love of The Outdoors

by Karmaloop Rep Code

A brand built on a deep passion for the outdoors, Patagonia makes clothing that keeps you safe and warm without causing unnecessary harm to the environment.

Patagonia began as a sports-specific apparel company when it was created by Yvon Chouinard in 1972. The brand made its mark, however, on high-end outdoor clothing, producing some of the most widely worn fleeces, jackets, parkas, knitwear, beanies, wetsuits, and base layer clothing for rock and alpine climbing, skiing, and surfing.

Patagonia received two National Geographic Adventure Blog “Gear of the Year” awards in 2010 and holds “Editor’s Choice” and “Top Pick” awards from OutdoorGearLab.

Environmental activism

Part of Patagonia’s mission is to “build the best product and use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.”

Patagonia’s Reno, Nevada facility employs green design and technologies to achieve a LEED Gold certification. The company has a flex-time policy, allowing its employees to take time off to go surfing.

Patagonia also donates 1% of sales to environmental groups every year, and has encouraged other companies to do the same through its 1% For the Planet alliance.

In addition to global causes, Patagonia supports several smaller initiatives such as the World Trout Initiative, Environmental Internships, the Conservation Alliance, and the Organic Exchange.

Patagonia often features its environmental campaigns in its product catalogs and advertisements. Recent campaigns include work with preventing oil drilling in the Alaska Wildlife Refuge, “Ocean As A Wilderness”, and “Don’t Dam Patagonia”.

In early 2008, Patagonia won the ‘Eco Brand of the Year’ award at the Volvo Ecodesign Forum during the ISPO Trade Show in Munich.

Recently, Patagonia launched a worldwide recycling initiative called the Common Threads Recycling Program, with a website called The Footprint Chronicles devoted to the explanation of its recycling process.

Since 1985, Patagonia has donated more than $46 million in cash and in-kind to domestic and international grassroots environmental groups.
