Kikkerland Where utilitarian gadgets become a delightful discovery

by Karmaloop Rep Code

Kikkerland is a company that designs and builds fun functional products. At Kikkerland, creativity runs rampant that even the most utilitarian gadget turns into a delightful discovery.

Since 1992, Kikkerland designers have been traveling the world in search of original ideas for things that can make life more enjoyable – clever things to intrigue you, smart things that make everyday tasks easier to accomplish, and gentle things that make you happy when you use them.

Kikkerland offers the world’s largest collection of ingenious items combining form, function, and delight in equal parts. You can find them in thousands of stores around the world, including museum and specialty shops.

Kikkerland DesignHow it all started

Kikkerland founder Jan van der Lande learned about the design business while working at Gallery 91 in SoHo. In 1988, he began selling a vase created by a designer friend from Amsterdam. After the vase became a hit in New York’s home design stores, Jan brought more innovative Dutch and Belgian home décor to the US and showcased his line at New York trade shows. The company grew rapidly and was incorporated in 1991.

Kikkerland means “land of frogs” in Dutch. It’s also a term of endearment for Holland where van der Lande was born. Jan’s houseboat on the Hudson River on the Upper West Side of Manhattan was the perfect starting place for Kikkerland, given that there are a lot of houseboats and water in Holland.

As the company grew, more designers joined the Kikkerland family and contributed their own unique creations to Kikkerland’s special brew of products. Chico Bicalho’s Critter Wind-Up laid the groundwork for the Kikkerland design philosophy: originality, humor, charm, value, affordability, and environmental concern.

Kikkerland designs

From the very beginning, it has been Kikkerland’s mission to promote self-producing designers from the Netherlands. Now the company works with designers from all over the world and builds their products in-house.

Kikkerland adds around 150 different items to its collection every six months, which amounts to roughly one product per day.

Many Kikkerland creations have become recipients of prestigious citations from various design organizations, the latest of which is the 2011 ICFF Editor’s Choice Awards. The Bowls B/V by Vincent de Rijk was even selected by the MoMA for its permanent collection.
