Sam Edelman: Designer Luxe at Accessible Price Points

by Karmaloop Rep Code

A creative visionary, Sam Edelman has been a dominant force in women’s fashion for more than 30 years, leaving an indelible mark on some of the most renowned contemporary footwear brands.

Edelman has made significant contributions to companies such as Ralph Lauren, Candies, and Kenneth Cole, which he co-founded. He is best known for developing Esprit into one of the most iconic junior footwear brands of the 1980s.

Parlaying his talents both as a brand builder and shoemaker, Edelman launched his own company in 1987 with his wife, muse, and life-long business partner, Libby Edelman. The Sam & Libby brand was a reflection of the couple’s youthful mindset, individuality, and confidence – offering fabulous fashion for the woman who has a grand instinct for style but not a grand budget.

Edelman left the footwear industry for some time to pursue another passion but came out of retirement in 2004 when he recognized a void in the marketplace of runway-inspired trends at an accessible price point. Filling that need, he launched the Sam Edelman brand which has become a fixture in fashion magazines and on the soles of celebrity feet ever since.

Hip shoe styles that bridge generations

Sam Edelman shoes are worn by women from four generations – Digital, Gen Y, Gen X, and Baby Boomers. With a finger on the pulse of today’s women, Edelman effortlessly bridges the gap between generations, creating designs that appeal to young hipsters as well as glam working moms.

Edelman styles are feminine and fierce at the same time. They’re so versatile you can wear them to the office or when you’re on holiday. Sam Edelman cemented itself as the go-to brand for fashion loving women when it released its Fall 2008 bestseller – fringed ankle boots in an assortment of jewel colors.

Sam Edelman for Brown

In 2010, Brown Shoe Company announced its acquisition of Edelman Shoes. Sam retained his role as President of the Sam Edelman division and is still based in its Manhattan design studio.

Singer, actress, and model Charlotte Kemp Muhl was the muse for the Spring/Summer 2010 collection. Featuring cleaned-up, sexy, rock and roll looks with nature elements, it is where bohemian meets downtown girl meets Upper East Side luxe.

Fall 2012 is all about ankle boots – from python prints to sultry straps. This wardrobe staple is not only stylish and comfortable, but also extremely versatile and can be worn with anything from skinny jeans to pleated skirts. Sam Edelman takes the ankle boot to new heights with unexpected embellishments, bold colors, and luxe textures. Check out the cowboy-inspired Stevie, the exotic Petty, the fierce Kendrix, and the wild Salina.

This year also marks Edelman’s venture into handbags. Leather and PU totes featuring animal prints and textures, classic black satchels, and leopard print clutches and crossbody bags are all part of Edelman’s first journey out of footwear.
