RAEN: Design-driven Hypoallergenic Eyewear with Carl Zeiss Protection

by Karmaloop Rep Code

Surf and skate meets ’50s styling in the RAEN eyewear range.

RAEN Optics is an independent, classics-driven brand that aims to bring quality and authenticity to the boutique eyewear market. Through its stylish collection of sunglasses, RAEN provides timeless, innovative accessories for the active lifestyle.

Brand history

RAEN was founded in 2008 by the foursome behind creative agency Libre Design: Justin Heit, Jeremy Heit, Micah Dunham, and Jordan Percy. Their common appreciation of iconic sunglasses and heavy coastal Encinitas influence have shaped what RAEN has become today – a high-fashion eyewear brand determined to create only authentic, innovative optics that offer intrinsic value.

RAEN products are inspired by the team’s own adventures and will inspire yours, be they close to home or far from shore.

Vintage cues, including architecture, furniture, and automobiles, are evident in each well-edited collection. Working with classic lines and shapes allows RAEN to produce timeless optics that are always relevant, vibrant, and inspired. Tastemakers no longer have to choose between superior style and refined optics. RAEN provides design-driven frames, including select pairs made of peerless Mazzucchelli 1849 zyl acetate. All frames are matched with world-leading Optics by Carl Zeiss Vision CR-39 lenses.

RAEN Optics are an ode to endless summers, made clear with its limited edition Myopia sunglasses created for surf label Alexandra Cassaniti. Other styles such as the Underwood, Ryko, and Squire draw from a mid-century design aesthetic. The Squire was inspired by a photograph of James Dean in his Speedster, and all three also work as sleekly retro eyeglass frames.

The handmade difference

Each RAEN frame is handmade with select European acetates and hardware, 100% hand-finished, with much of the cutting hand-guided. Each cut, each screw, each flourish is informed by an original vision with nothing lost to a generic assembly line. The difference between RAEN’s hand-tooled frames and cheap, injection-molded ones is evident even to the untrained eye.

Each season, RAEN creates custom acetate combinations unique to its line. After cutting, each frame is formed by hand to perfectly match its intended silhouette and then checked with a micrometer to tolerances of 1/100th of an inch. With intricate designs and quiet detailing, RAEN ensures that the original studio vision makes it onto your face. After forming, each frame is hand-polished on a wheel with jeweler-grade precision, delivering luster that lasts.

Custom prescription optics

RAEN handmade frames allow any lens to be swapped out for a prescription lens, transforming your favorite style into customized Rx optics. Opticians always prefer to work with handmade frames and RAEN’s acetate can be heated and molded to achieve a perfect fit for any face. High-quality core wire inserts also allow almost limitless fine-tuning.

People with sensitive skin often experience allergic reactions to low-grade metals (such as nickel) and plastics found in common eyewear. RAEN’s acetate frames, stainless steel hardware, and core wire are free of such materials. Stainless steel is also durable and corrosion-resistant, and five barrel hinges ensure that your eyewear’s arms always swing smoothly without leaving a rash.
