About the designer

nOir is the brainchild of Israeli-born designer Leeora Catalan. Starting her career at Ralph Lauren and Oscar de la Renta, Catalan made a name for herself first as a fashion stylist. A void in the market challenged her to create custom pieces for a fashion show she was styling, and it was these first designs that crystallized her future in fashion accessories. They were ordered onsite by a department store and pulled in by Italian Vogue to shoot, leading to the birth of nOir in 1995.

From Catalan’s Manhattan studio apartment came her biggest seller of 1998 – rhinestone butterfly hairpins – which has inspired a rash of knockoffs. Now settled in a Brooklyn townhouse, Leeora no longer minds the copycats. As they say, imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Enjoying the challenge of working with new materials and directions, every season, Catalan adds a wider variety to every new season but strives to keep the collection timeless.

Exaggerating classics, injecting a sense of humor, and creating show-stopping pieces is the drive behind the nOir concept. New York City is a major source of inspiration – from Little India in Queens, to Fulton Mall, to the flea markets, to Madison Avenue.

From its basic pieces steeped with edgy details, to the fabulous line of nOir cocktail rings, each design is made to push the envelope and never settle for the status quo. nOir jewelry is made for the girl who doesn’t bend to the whim of fleeting trends, but instead carves her own special niche in style, not afraid to try out new things to keep things interesting.

When the folks at Swarovski asked Catalan to create a showpiece for an April promotional event, they had a handbag or tiara in mind. Instead, Leeora delivered a Kawasaki Ninja ZX-12R motorcycle encrusted with 50,408 clear, black and purple Austrian crystals. The bike sparked so much buzz that even Mariah Carey used it in ads for her upcoming “Glitter” CD.
